Connor & Gaskins completes apartment makeover fro NCH nurses
Naples Daily News, October 14, 2011

NCH Healthcare System staff members celebrated the completed refurbishment of 10 apartments for traveling nurses who supplement the hospital staff during high season. Hillcrest Manor Apartments, located near NCH downtown, received a comprehensive makeover in a 10-week construction project by Connor & Gaskins Unlimited (CG Unlimited).

The interior and exterior refurbishment included new railings, waterproofed staircases and deck; rain gutters and repaired fascia; installation of tile and carpet; all new appliances, sinks and fixtures; kitchen and bathroom cabinets and with extended counter space in the kitchens; extra-wide shutters and hurricane-rated windows with Corian sills; resurfaced bathtubs; hurricane-rated entry doors and more effective interior and exterior lighting for each one and two-bedroom unit. A fire sprinkler and alarm system was installed in the final 10 days, bringing the building up to current safety codes since the building was first constructed in 1964.

Among the celebrants gathered in the model apartment for the unveiling was NCH President and CEO Allen S. Weiss, M.D. who complimented the smart design.

“Nurse recruitment and retention is important and you have created a nice oasis for hard-working people. With this smart design, you have created a lovely environment and given traveling nurses a convenient and attractive place to live,” said Dr. Weiss. “This helps our economy by keeping professionals happy and working here in Southwest Florida.”

NCH Healthcare System leases the Hillcrest Manor Apartments specifically for nurses and Dr. Weiss acknowledged construction contractors Barry Connor and Craig Gaskins of CG Unlimited who carried out the refurbishment project on behalf of the complex owner Lorcar, Inc. a privately held Naples-based corporation specializing in real estate investment.

Diana Bailey coordinates the NCH Healthcare System’s Seasonal Employment Housing Program to assist core staff members with the increased numbers of patients and plans to hire several hundred people.

“Many of the same nurses come back to Naples year after year and they will be so surprised and pleased to see what you have done here,” said Bailey. “To give the nurses something like this to come home to…it’s priceless,” she added.

Senior Design Architect Renée Zepeda is the architect for the refurbishment project. As a healthcare specialty associate with Fletcher Thompson Architecture, Engineering and Interior Design, Zepeda has worked on numerous designs for NCH. Previous work includes renovation of the 4th and 5th floor north wings and the public corridors for the downtown campus and the renovation of the emergency department waiting, reception and pediatrics for the north campus.

Zepeda’s design called for a crisp white railing to replace the cracked balustrade. Walkways were refinished and she added contrasting paint colors on the exterior walls and trim to reflect light from more modern entrance and security light fixtures. The interiors of 4 two-bedroom and 6 one-bedroom apartments, however, are where the construction and design team have made the most impact. Zepeda’s clever inset tile design defines the kitchen area, while an extended counter to accommodate a couple of bar stools creates an area for a quick breakfast or lunch. Installing the microwave above the full-size oven created additional counter space. Bright butterscotch walls contrast with light oak-finished kitchen cabinetry to create a warm kitchen environment.

C&G Unlimited upgraded the Jack and Jill bathroom design that separates the bedrooms in the two-bedroom unit, with full refinished bathtubs, new cabinetry and double sinks, tile walls and flooring and vanity lighting.

Hillcrest Manor Apartments refurbishment was one of the first projects completed by CG Unlimited, who combined 26 years of experience at BCBE spearheading projects like condominiums, government facilities, office buildings, custom homes, and medical centers, to start their own contracting firm in May.

Other Southwest Florida projects underway at CG Unlimited range from interior renovations of retail space, renovations of a surgery center, condominiums and commercial tenant improvements to a custom-built beachfront home.
